Organization Profile
Founded in 1983 by John W. Rogers, Jr., Ariel Investments is a Chicago-based money management firm that has grown from 2 to 100 employees with more than $19 billion in assets under management. In addition to managing separate accounts for corporate, public, union and non-profit organizations, Ariel Investments also serves as the investment adviser to the no-load Ariel Mutual Funds.
Professional Background
Prior to founding Ariel, John W. Rogers, Jr. worked for the investment banking firm of William Blair & Company. Rogers’ investment expertise has brought him to the forefront of media attention in The New York Times, BusinessWeek, USA Today, and Barron’s. He has made guest appearances on television shows ranging from Louis Rukeyser’s Wall Street to The Oprah Winfrey Show. He has spoken at various academic institutions including: Harvard Business School, the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, the Wharton School of Business and Howard University.
Education/Awards
Rogers graduated in 1980 with an AB in Economics from Princeton University where he was also Captain of the Varsity Basketball Team. In 1995, he was profiled in The Mutual Fund Masters with Peter Lynch and John Templeton. In 1994, he was named by TIME magazine as one of its “50 for the Future”, a roster of the country’s most promising leaders under age 40. In 1988, he was named Mutual Fund Manager of the Year by Sylvia Porter’s Personal Finance Magazine.
Business/Community Affiliations
John is also actively involved in the community through a variety of civic and professional institutions. His community outreach includes serving as a Director of the Chicago Urban League; the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center as well as serving as a Trustee of the University of Chicago. Additionally, John is on the Board of Directors of Aon Corporation; Bally Total Fitness Holding Corporation; Exelon Corporation and McDonald’s Corporation.
